Elastic Compute (ECS)
Elastic, secure compute instances
Cloud servers that provision in minutes and scale on demand. Multiple instance families cover general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and AI-accelerated workloads, so you spend time on your business — not on server upkeep.

What cloud servers are actually for
Use a cloud server whenever you need control of the operating system: web apps and backend APIs, self-managed databases, crawlers and batch jobs, or anything that depends on specific kernel parameters or a custom image.
If you are only hosting a static site or a purely functional API, object storage plus a CDN — or a fully managed service — usually costs less. A cloud server bills for the whole machine, and idle time is billed too.
Choosing a spec you will not have to keep changing
Start from the memory-to-CPU ratio. General-purpose covers most web and middleware workloads; compute-optimized suits heavy builds and transcoding; memory-optimized fits caches and large in-memory databases; GPU instances handle training and inference.
Do not size for peak traffic. Pick the tier that covers your normal load and let autoscaling absorb the spikes — on pay-as-you-go billing, permanently paying for one tier higher usually costs more than a handful of scale-out events.
Bandwidth and disks are the costs people forget
On many accounts, public egress and block storage end up costing more than the instance itself. Decide the bandwidth billing model up front: traffic-based pricing wins for egress-heavy workloads, fixed bandwidth wins for steady, predictable traffic.

How is this different from shared or lightweight hosting?
A cloud server gives you root access and dedicated resources — swap the OS, tune kernel parameters, attach multiple volumes. Lightweight and shared hosting pool resources: cheaper, but with hard ceilings on configuration and scaling.
Can I start small and resize later?
Yes. Instances on the major clouds support live resizing; an upgrade usually needs a single reboot to take effect. Take a system-disk snapshot first so you can roll back quickly if anything looks wrong.
Pay-as-you-go or reserved — which is cheaper?
Steady, predictable workloads are cheaper reserved, since the effective unit price is lower. Workloads with sharp peaks, or frequent short-lived batch jobs, are cheaper pay-as-you-go — otherwise you pay for idle hours.

AWS Shield Advanced: what is free, what is billed
Shield Advanced covering your WAF costs is true, with four boundaries: only protected resources, only standard features, and subject to a request ceiling. Bot Control, CAPTCHA and web ACLs above 1,500 WCUs are still billed separately.
Cloud CostAWS private pricing (EDP): threshold, risk, shortcut
Private pricing is the highest-threshold layer of the AWS discount system: a cross-service discount rather than a single-service commitment. Two traps come first - a shortfall payment if you miss the commitment, and mandatory enterprise support. And AWS states plainly that buying through a partner qualifies too.
Cloud CostMulti-cloud cost visibility: unify categories first
Each provider runs its own billing system, so there is no ready-made unified view. Most people reach for a tool first, which reverses the order: unify the cost categories and the tagging scheme first. Four accounting mismatches will make the numbers disagree.
